1.0 Pre-production:- the concept for the Sweet Paradise video clip was conceived by Caurie de Cristal and her sister, Carine Iscol, whilst Caurie was on holiday and visiting family in Brittany back in February 2016.
2.0 The Original Concept
Here Caurie describes to the Director and Cinematographer, James O’Gorman of Sovereign Media her original ideas for the video:
“The story is about a little girl who is working as a slave in a zoo. The first scene is that she is sleeping in a stable and dreaming that she is in the middle of a dry land. Then a woman (Mother Nature) comes and gives her a key, which is very colourful. It is the only thing that is colourful thing in that scene. Everything else is very dry and brown. Then she is woken up and she has got the key for real in her hand. The owner of the zoo comes into the room suddenly and drops two buckets for her to get some water for the animals. She puts the key in her pocket desperately, she takes the two buckets and walks to a forest which is beside a river.
When she arrives at the river or lake, she puts the buckets on the floor and then takes the key out of the pocket and puts it under ground. She can also see the dry dreamscape again, with safari animals wandering and running by. Also she sees instruments like guitar or keys playing, with electrics coming from the ground.
Then there is a dry leaf or dry flower in the ground which is growing but she is so amazed at what she sees that she has got tears in her eyes. The tear drop falls on the ground, then the flower becomes alive, which transforms into the lady who gave her the key. As a result the dry land is also gradually changing bit by bit into a healthy colourful wonderful land.
There can be other scenes between this one of the little girl daydreaming about her life chained as a slave to her work, mopping floors, cleaning the house and feeding animals.
Following this there is a lady, the zoo owner’s wife sitting in a chair reading a fashion magazine with animal skins made into jackets. A little boy is playing with a toy gun pretending to shoot the girl, moping the floor. The girl indicates to the boy that she has something to show him. She takes him outside to the dog that is chained up to the wall. They set the dog free, which annoys the Zoo owner. So they run off and into the beautiful forest, beckoning the boy as she runs into the forest, with the band playing beautiful music, they reach the beautiful world.
They look at each other and decide to stay there.
The mother and father run after them, and the mum decides to stay with the children, dancing with the band. The father though stops and goes down on his knees and wonders which way he should go, back to his Zoo with the animals or go into the other world with the rest of his family. The little girl gives the man the key that the beautiful lady (Mother Nature) had given him, so it is up to him which way he should go.
It is important that the girl is wearing a chain like bracelet to represent that girls that were slaves being similar to animals in the zoo being chained.
But the end of the video is where the man, the father and Zoo owner has to decide which way to turn”.
These ideas were transmitted to the James in a Skype meeting back in June 2016. James then had the difficult task to see into Caurie’s mind and visualise these scenes but in practical way of transitions, locations, scenes and props.
3.0 However with Caurie liaising with James and her sister Carine on the concept, Jon Harris set about finding the most suitable locations here in the Ashdown Forest, a job which took up most of the months of April, May, June and July. Finally after much searching and testing out the micro scenes we ended up choosing the Forest on the edge of Nursery Lane, in Fairwarp; The old 16 century barn at Black Ven Farm as well as their lake in their 100 acre forest.
